Our
Operation: We
utilize low impact techniques such as, harvesting the majority of our
timber
in the winter, on-site milling, and
small rubber-tired tractors. We also come out of the forest with a load of
wood every time we cut, reducing
the number of trips and fuel that the product takes to produce. Fuels
reduction, and helping the local economy are benefits of removing this
dead timber. We also use the outer portion of the log, or slab boards, as
firewood, and the planer shavings are used as animal bedding.
The
Product: We utilize low impact techniques, harvesting only
beetle kill trees and mainly in winter over snow. We cut our product on
private land less than 20 miles from our shop. Very little skidding of the
logs is done, leaving little damage to the forest. Our band mill is
extremely efficient taking a very small kerf, using less power (18 horse
power), and producing more lumber from each log than traditional methods.
